How a personal shopping appointment can provide sustainable style solutions.
When buying new clothes, it is about having our priorities in the right order. If not, we are ending up buying items to replace them with new clothes of the same, which won’t give us the needed and wanted transformation. The cost per wear rate has the wrong proportion. As a result, we end up with a wardrobe that is holding us back, because we have nothing to wear that we want, love and need to wear for our lifestyle.
Looking beautiful only on the outside is not anymore, the Nr. 1 priority. There is a new social activism movement: LOOKING GOOD WHILE DOING GOOD with our purchases at the same time while treating the planet as we planned to stay.
We need to shop ourselves into a better world by being more mindful and conscious about what we buy and why we buy it. We need to ask WHY before we buy and start to wear our values and buy in what we believe in.
Conscious consumerism is referred to as voting with your money. Every single time we buy something new we are casting a vote in which world we want to live in. We-the consumers- participate in bad consumption activities when buying clothes, we don’t need or clothes where we don’t check the sustainable and ethical “threat of our clothing”. Our purchases support the brands’ productions and the ethics they promote with our demand for more.
We should always buy the best quality we can afford, so we can get the best ROI. The more we wear a garment the cheaper it becomes. While choosing garments for going out or for special occasion it is best not to blow your budget if you might wear it only once.
According to WRAP.org.uk, around £140m, or 350,000 tonnes worth of unwanted and overbought clothing goes straight to landfill in the UK.
- The fashion industry’s environmental footprint is growing commensurate with digital communications and an insatiable appetite. Consumers want instant gratification, and that includes seasonal fashion.
- Fast-fashion and our fast fashion habits are causing irreparable damage. The industry contributes more to climate change than the yearly emissions of air travel and sea travel combined.
- Like You Tube and Instagram are no longer just a video and social-sharing platforms, but also a hub of consumerism addiction.
- Unfortunately, there too many impressionable viewers copy influencers style, so if they are continually driving fast fashion, their viewers’ purchasing patterns will follow.
As we get to grips with the unglamorous side of our consumer habits, we must understand that our appetite for consumerism has reached new levels.
Therefore, we need a new attitude to life and the earth, we live on. In a world where we can be anything we need to be kind to everyone: THINK AND ACT ECO AND NOT EGO.
It’s time to change it up and start to truly understand the origins of the pieces we are adding to our wardrobe.
Every year, billions of animals suffer and die for clothing and accessories. All this is done in the name of fashion. It is neither cool, hip, or ok wearing clothes that were made with animals suffering.
We must replace our addiction for newness with a healthier love affair for SLOW FASHION, SUSTAINABLE FASHION and ETHICAL FASHION.
What is what?
Slow fashion:
It refers usually to the design, style and quality of the garment that was made to last in make and fabric. It is slowing down the consumption and pace of shopping because it is staying away from fluctuating trends and instead choosing and wearing more timeless designs, so you can enjoy wearing the garments for many years to come.
Ethical Fashion:
It is often concerned with human and animal rights. Ethical fashion applies to working conditions, fair wages and treatment, and no child labour.
Basically how fashion affects people and the planet at all stages of the supply chain, including how they are made and where they end up.
Sustainable Fashion or Eco Fashion:
It is often concerned with the environmental impact. Opting for fibres and materials that are organic, recycled, or repurposed, limiting harmful chemicals/dyes, reducing energy/water usage and waste.
Whenever possible we should try to choose to buy better and choose brands that practice slow or sustainable fashion and ethical fashion over fast fashion.
The goal is to become an informed customer. We need to learn to research the labels we buy from and making sure not falling victim to green washing tricks practised by so many fashion brands to look more attractive to their customers and gain quick green status with their customers.
Whenever we adopt a respectful and slow attitude to clothes, we are saying “No” to the outdated fashion business model of the fashion industry and “Yes” to higher standards.
Switching from fast fashion and slowing down our clothing consumption doesn’t always mean that life must become much more expensive, but more about buying the best affordable quality we can get rather buying quantity.
As consumers and manufacturers wake up to the damaging effects of fast fashion and throwaway designs, the focus on quality, style and sustainable manufacturing of garments are essential. It requires a huge shift in mindset by changing our views of pleasure and how we love and look at something.
Doing something well and with quality from product design-throughout the supply chain, manufacturing process to green packaging cost more money, take more time and retailers can’t absorb all the extra costs.
We, the consumers, need to be prepared to spend more on sustainable clothing, because sustainable and ethical fashion’s higher price points are due to fair labour, safe workplaces, artisan craft, organic and regenerative materials, local and small-batch production.
Investing more money per item is a significant way to encourage reducing consumption by choosing quality over quantity.
Switching from fast fashion and slowing down our clothing consumption for newness doesn’t always mean that life must become much more expensive, but instead by paying more per item allows us to really think about what we are buying and buying into.
Buying better quality items is beneficial to us consumers in many ways:
- Quality clothes are better made, they look better, last longer and are a more cost-effective option in the long run, because they become cheaper the more often you wear them. It is cost per wear.
- Also, they are more likely to be made from better quality materials, which carry less toxins.
- Buying quality will help to reduce the negative environmental and social impacts of over consumption of fashion and will celebrate real style.
Buying quality over quantity is a win win for everyone – for your health, the health of the garment workers and the health of our planet.
Whenever we adopt a respectful and slow attitude to clothes, we are saying “No” to the outdated fashion business model of the fashion industry and “Yes” to higher standards.
We are what we wear, and our new shopping inspiration should come from: BUYING IN WHAT WE BELIEVE IN – compassion, non-violence, for the animals, for the people and for the planet.
When buying clothes in SALES, we women don’t tend to focus on how much money they cost, rather more how much money we saved.
But it is not a bargain:
- when you never wear it or
- wear it once or
- wear it once and it falls apart after one wear
Most of our sustainable wardrobe should be based on seasonless staples, so we can wear them in between seasons and for many years to come, therefore we avoid the risk of accumulating a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear.
Utilizing mindful shopping will serve as a first step to decrease reckless spending, increase conscientious shopping, and allow for a more fulfilling shopping experience in the moment.
By investing in seasonless staples we are reducing shopping mistakes and reduce our carbon footprint, waste and the use of natural resources by shopping with purpose and positive impact because we exercise smarter decisions for versatile dress solutions.
We need to think twice before we buy something new and strategise over every single new purchase to avoid negative clutter in our closet, adding carbon footprint and fashion waste to our planet.
Plus, it will help you to get control of your spending habits and benefit your emotional well-being doing good for yourself and the planet at the same time.
Therefore, your new shopping behaviour and inspiration should be about shopping with impact and purpose.
Next time you feel exercising retail therapy, you should remind yourselve that a beautiful new garment can’t fix a broken heart or an unhappy mind.
Be courageous to do some soul searching to get to the root of your problem rather trying to fix it with retail therapy. It will put only a band aid on the real issue and will hurt you even more when the band aid comes off.
Whenever you feel triggered to buy something new, please remember Fashion is dictated by designers, magazine editors, photographers, celebrities, and influencers. It changes each season based on arbitrary guidelines that may or may not reflect your life.
While Style is personal. It is your calling card of who you are. It’s how you put the clothes together – what influences you as a person, your environment, your politics, your socio-economic scale.
Trends come and go – but your style will remain – get refined with creating a signature style and adjusted with current times.
Fashion by its very nature focuses on fleeting trends, on trend items that are churned out by the hundreds of thousands. As a result, quality is poor, and the items will never last. Fact is they are designed to fall apart after one wear or one wash.
Style on the other hand celebrates well thought out, well designed and well-made items.
- It is about understanding which fashion trends will make you look like a FASHION PRO and not like a FASHION AMATEUR, who is still experimenting with her looks.
- Style is about learning, knowing, and understanding which design styles will give you an authentic look, make you look and feel your best and at the same time has a better impact on you, your lifestyle, your wardrobe, wallet, and the planet.
- Being a Fashion and Style PRO frees you from relying other people’s opinions, what looks best on you and what you need and want for yourself and your current life-style.
